FS2004 Scenery Enhancements for the Innsbruck (LOWI) area, Austria

File Name: Innsbruck_G2K4.zip
Author: Holger Sandmann, hsandman@sfu.ca
Date of Release:	February 2004
Version: 1.00

New roads, railroads, streams, river, landclass, and waterclass for the Innsbruck area in the Austrian Alps. Based on 30-m and 10-m satellite imagery. Not a finished product but rather a "Sunday afternoon" project to illustrate the visual improvements that can be achieved with little time commitment and the help of the wonderful Ground2K4 software by Christian Fumey. Meant to be used with one of the SRTM-based add-on meshes. I have included my Ground2K4 source code so that interested users can improve on and expand the project area (requires a separate download of my pre-processed satellite imagery, G2K4-bmp_innsbruck.zip).

Due to significant changes in FS2004 to vector and polygon coding, the scenery enhancements cannot be used with FS2002. However, the landclass files will work in FS2002 (see Installation in FS2002 below).

----------------------------------------------------------------
Installation in FS2004 (FS2002 users see "Installation in FS2002" section instead!):

There are two possible "levels" of installation. To fully enjoy the scenery enhancements you should disable the FS9 default road, railroad, and stream vector files and replace them with my edited version but this is optional! If you want to leave the default files as they are, skip Steps 2, 3 and 4 in the instruction.

1) Extract Innsbruck_G2K4.zip to a temporary directory, making sure that the "use folder names" option is enabled.

-----

2) Move the "temp hold for Innsbruck_G2K4" into your "FS9\Scenery\Eurw" folder.

3) Open your "FS9\Scenery\Eurw\Scenery" folder and move the following files into the "temp hold for Innsbruck_G2K4" folder:

	RD951150.bgl
	RR951150.bgl
	ST951150.bgl

Please double-check in the "temp hold for Innsbruck_G2K4" folder that it contains the files listed above. There are many files with VERY similar names in "FS9\Scenery\Eurw\Scenery" and it's easy to grab the wrong one.

4) Move the three files from the "default scenery replacement files" folder into the "Austria Innsbruck Ground2K4\scenery" folder.

-----

5) Move the "Austria Innsbruck Ground2K4" folder into your "FS9\Addon Scenery" folder.

6) Start up FS2004 and add and activate "Austria Innsbruck Ground2K4" with the Settings > Scenery Library > Add Scenery function. Level of priority is not important as long as it is above (in the scenery library window) the default Western Europe scenery.

7) That's all! Enjoy your flights in the Innsbruck area!

8) Note: If you don't like the water color of the Inn river, delete the WC_051_015.bgl file, in "Austria Innsbruck Ground2K4\scenery".

9) If you'd like to edit or further enhance the area, read the instructions in the "Ground2K4 source files" folder.

Source Data:

1) Landsat 5 satellite imagery (30-m resolution); geocorrected bands are available for free download at http://glcf.umiacs.umd.edu/index.shtml. The Landsat data are referenced to the UTM projection and need to be re-projected to lat/long for use in FS).

2) SPOT satellite imagery data (10-m resolution); a geocorrected mosaic of various SPOT scenes is available for free download at http://geoengine.nima.mil (product type "DOI 10m"). The SPOT data are already in lat/long WGS84 projection and can be used in Ground2K4 after changing the file format from .tif to (8-bit) .bmp.

----------------------------------------------------------------
Software Used:

1) Ground2K4 V5.32, by Christian Fumey, for adding rivers, streams, roads, railroads, bridges, as well as landclass and waterclass replacements. Available at AVSIM.COM and other FS file servers.

2) LWMViewer, by Jim Keir, for displaying FS default vector and polygon files and de-compiling into editable ASM source code. Available at http://www.jimkeir.co.uk/FlightSim/LWMViewer.html.

3) BGLC.exe, by FS Development Team, for re-assembling the edited default vector and polygon files. Part of the FS2002 MS BGL Compiler Software Developer's Kit (SDK) http://www.microsoft.com/games/flightsimulator/fs2002_downloads_sdk.asp.

4) DefArea V2.0, by Christian Fumey, for excluding incorrectly placed shorelines, roads, and rivers. Available at AVSIM.COM and other FS file servers.

In addition, I used MS Wordpad for text editing, Photoshop 5 for image editing, and Snapper for in-flight screenshots.

Acknowledgements:

Obviously, any digital data would be worthless for FS enthusiasts without the wonderful free software tools to put them into Flight Simulator. I am very grateful to the authors of the software I used. Also, many thanks to everyone in the active Flight Simulator community for providing such great and diverse freeware add-ons and active discussion forums. Finally, thanks to J for her blank but simpatico stare at my time-consuming 'hobby' ;-)
